Bij taal is er vaak geen "daarom" . De uitdrukking is : the best in town .

Juist is; 'the best coffee in town'

In het Engels komt het vaak voor dat je het lidwoord 'the' niet gebruikt, in tegenstelling tot onze taal, waar we vrijwel altijd 'de' voor een zelfstandig nmw. plaatsen.

Engelsen gebruiken geen 'the' bij zelfstandige naamwoorden in algemene zin;
'Prices are still rising'...( de (algemene) prijzen stijgen nog steeds) Worden specifieke prijzen bedoeld, dan wordt wel 'the'gebruikt.....The prices of most cars (specifiek) have fallen...(de prijzen van de meeste auto's zijn gedaald)

Bij maaltijden wordt geen 'the' gebruikt; 'What time is diner'? ... Lunch is ready'...at breakfast you get toast'.

Ook geen 'the' bij straten, pleinen, gebouwen, parken, openbare gebouwen ( school, kerk, ziekenhuis) bruggen....'We go to school', 'He has to go to jail', 'We have visited London Eye', 'She is in hospital', 'They live in Downing Street', 'They went to church'.

Bij het superlatief 'most' komt geen 'the' als het de absolute meerderheid is;
'Most British teenagers like to dance'.
'Most' in de betekenis van 'meer dan iemand anders' krijgt echter wel 'the' ervoor....'Freerecord Shop sold the most games'.

Als je naar iets specifieks verwijst gebruik je wél het woordje 'the' voor het zelfst.nmw.....'it happened in the summer of 1980'...'it was in the street with the wooden houses'...'the wedding ceremony was beautiful'. Dit houdt in dat wanneer een specifieke stad bedoeld wordt, er wel 'the' voor komt te staan....'the best coffee in the town London'. Meestal hebben ze het echter dan over 'Londontown.

Dan zijn er uiteraard ook uitzonderingswoorden waar geen 'the' voor komt te staan zoals bij 'people', 'literature', 'education', 'society', 'happiness', 'death', 'history', '(un)employment', 'parliament', 'nature', 'heaven/hell', 'mankind' en misschien nog wat meer die me nu niet te binnen schieten.
